home about cerebral palsy about sdr links/videos events donate/contact us documents our supporters we did it! thanks to the generosity and hard work of many we are delighted to say that we raised the funds needed for adam's operation and his aftercare and rehab following the operation. thank you all so very much. adam had his sdr surgery in st louis on june 24th 2014 and all went very well. he has been working hard ever since with regular physiotherapy and daily stretching and exercise routines as well as other activities to help strengthen him up. it is an exciting journey that we are on and we are delighted that adam's potential has been released and we continue to see improvements all the time. we will be forever grateful to all those who have contributed to allow this to happen. thank you. meet adam adam walker is 7 years old and lives in westhill, aberdeenshire. adam and his twin sister gemma were born 3 months early in february 2007. adam weighed a tiny 1lb 14oz at birth. as time passed it became clear that adam wasn't developing at quite the same rate as his sister and shortly before his second birthday he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. his condition mainly affects his legs and although adam can walk independently he wears plastic splints and special boots to help him. he needs daily physio to help keep the tightness in his muscles at bay and this condition means that many of the everyday activities that most of us take for granted are a real challenge for adam. since adam was diagnosed, we have researched an operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy (sdr) which is carried out in the st louis children's hospital, st louis, missouri. the results have been life changing for both children and adults who have undergone the procedure. adam is an independent walker although unstable on his feet. this procedure will enable adam to participate in activities we all take for granted with our children such as riding a bike, playing football, running and climbing. even getting dressed is difficult for adam as the stiffness in his legs makes it very difficult for him to get trousers, shoes and socks on and off. whilst cerebral palsy is not a degenerative condition, adam's mobility is likely to deteriorate and become more noticeable in years to come as he gets bigger and heavier. adam has been accepted for sdr by st louis children's hospital and is described as an excellent candidate for the surgery. the estimated costs of the operation, travel and accommodation are around £50,000. adam will also require intensive physio when he comes home and if there are any funds remaining after the costs of the operation they will be used to fund this as it is unlikely to be able to be provided by the nhs. the purpose of adam's website is to help us raise funds to give adam a life changing operation that will keep him on his feet. we asked adam what he would like to do most if his legs were fixed, he said "run like my friends can". that is adam's aim. to donate please click on the "donate/contact us" page on the menu. thank you. proudly powered by weebly
